Our Mission Notre mission

RDRLS Hawaii Wa'a was established in 2018 with a clear purpose: to preserve and pass on the art of rudderless V1 paddling and traditional Hawaiian canoe building. Based at Kailua Beach on Oahu, we operate from a hale wa'a shared with Kailua Canoe Club and Kai Oni Canoe Club — right across from Buzz's Original Steak House. RDRLS Hawaii Wa'a a été fondé en 2018 avec un objectif clair : préserver et transmettre l'art du paddling V1 rudderless et de la construction traditionnelle de pirogues hawaïennes. Our waters are Kailua Bay, paddling toward Popoia Island, where the ashes of Joseph 'Stuboy' Kanai Kalama Jr. rest. Every stroke carries meaning. Every session honors tradition. David Kalama

David carries over 150 years of Hawaiian canoe-building heritage in his hands. A lifelong paddling coach, he trains and guides paddlers from the beach alongside his wife Kim. His craft is not just woodwork — it is the continuation of a lineage. David porte dans ses mains plus de 150 ans d'héritage hawaïen de construction de pirogues. David's wife and a paddler her entire life. With decades of coaching experience, Kim watches every stroke from the shore and refines technique after each session. Her eye for detail and dedication to each paddler define the RDRLS coaching approach. Épouse de David et paddleuse depuis toujours. Micah Kalama

Son of David and Kim. Micah leads the pack on the water from his black carbon fiber V1. A natural waterman who won his first V1 race alongside Christian Marston, Micah represents the next generation of the Kalama legacy — bringing both intensity and heart to every session. Christian Hauata Marston Sr.

Tahitian-born, Kauai-raised. Hanai brother. Né à Tahiti, élevé à Kauai. Frère hanai.

Founder of the Aloha Aito race on Kauai in 2017 and owner of the legendary Tahiti Nui restaurant in Hanalei. Christian brought V1 canoes to what would become RDRLS and proposed moving Aloha Aito to Oahu in 2018. He and David are hanai brothers — family by choice. Fondateur de la course Aloha Aito sur Kauai en 2017 et propriétaire du légendaire restaurant Tahiti Nui à Hanalei. Aloha Aito

Christian founded the Aloha Aito race on Kauai in 2017 before bringing it to Oahu, where it became RDRLS Hawaii's signature international V1 event.
